Education
Adrian described the education slot as an opportunity to learn more of the skills needed to utilitise BNI to the maximum. He asked the members to volunteer to do the Education slot rather than waiting to be asked, it is a good chance to contribute to the chapter. He also asked we all help the new leadership team to build on the great job the previous team did. The whole team should try and spend as much time as the leadership team do to build the chapter, everyone should consider themselves as part of the leadership team.
Adrian reminded us of the visitor target – 3 visitors each in the next 6 months, if anyone needs help with how to invite visitors without the “hard sell”. Adrian concluded by noting that he feels our chapter is the best of all the chapters he has visited and we should work to make it even better.

Mazuma was started 5 – 6 years ago by a couple of individuals to offer quality book keeping to self employed people enabling them to reduce their accountancy fees. Mazuma can help small businesses by freeing them up from paperwork and allowing them to get on with the things they are good – their own business.
Clients of Mazuma can put all their paperwork in their “purple envelopes” each month send them off to Sharon and she will return monthly management accounts enabling them to plan for the future of their businesses. They can check their costs against their sales ensuring they make a profit. Sharon described good management accounts as a ‘rear view mirror’ on a business, a tool to make business decisions and check goals.
Clients of Mazuma just have to put all their paperwork in their “purple envelope” and post it to Sharon and she will sort everything out and produce comprehensive management accounts for them.
To summarize Mazuma:
• is an easy to use service that puts accountancy into plain English
• prides itself on providing excellent customer service to all clients
• does not ‘tie’ clients into long contracts or a minimum term
• offers all services on a monthly basis, paid for monthly
• its target market are new businesses, the self employed, sole trader, micro businesses and small businesses
• offers good advice at cost effective prices

EDUCATION
Martyn gave the education slot this week as the new chief visitor host. He encouraged people to sign in at the table and then immediately move away. When people walk in all they see is a row of backs which isn’t particularly welcoming. This is especially true for visitors who may be feeling slightly intimidated by a congregation of people that have already established relationships with other BNI members. He also suggested that you don’t congregate by the coffee machine but move down to the bottom end of the room where there is plenty of room to network. BNI Guildford has a conversion rate of 24% where on average the other chapters are converting an average of 8%. This is a fantastic achievement but to continue this growth everybody needs to sell BNI in order to grow the chapter to over 40 members.

Today’s speakers were the new team Gary T (Chapter Director), Julie (Membership Coordinator) & Bruce (Secretary Treasurer).
A great motivational talk today by the new team. Gary started the proceedings by asking “How can we improve?” The last leadership team did such a great job that we don’t need to improve things we just need to build on the foundations that they have already laid. No need to “reinvent the weel”!! The same as the last six months visitors are the focus as they provide a large percentage of the business. If we don’t have visitors the energy of the group declines and there isn’t the same buzz and eagerness as when visitors attend. The challenge for the next 6 months is for each member to bring 3 visitors to the group. If you feel this is unachievable for you please speak to the leadership team who will help you reach this goal. The aim is to achieve a group size of 41 by the end of term.
Julie spoke about the mentor role which is going to become a more prominent role of the group. Once new visitors have converted to members we need to ensure that they are nurtured and understand the concept of BNI. It’s recommended that to remain effective within BNI that you attend the MST training at least once a year.
Finally Bruce spoke about the plan for the next 6 months. Similar to the concept of the 1 – 1 board there will now be a board for visitors so everybody which will be updated every week. The seating arrangements will also change and will be on a rota basis and will be as follows:
Week 1) Free range
Week 2) Leadership team will set place names
Week 3) Chair Bingo
Week 4) Power Teams
Week 5) Free range (if applicable)
There will also be an old members day where previous members will be re-invited. Visitors won’t be invited during that week.

No visitors this week.
EDUCATION
Cameron gave the education slot on the BNI name badge. He suggested that we do not put business cards in the holder as your name is often not seen very clearly. If you wear your badge and people can see your name then they are more likely to remember you and what you do. Visitors may not feel comfortable about having to peer closely at a your badge, so make them feel more at home by making it easier for them to see who you are.

Today’s speaker was Reece Howe – Kirkwood Care.
Reece gave us a fantastic presentation about Kirkwood Care – from conception to the present day. Kirkwood Care allows the elderly and disabled to stay in their own homes for longer, with their pets and their belongings around them and at a cost that can be cheaper than nursing homes. His staff are experienced and well trained and are communicative and helpful. The 3 key things needed in life to “stay well” are:- communication, food and mobility and Kirkwood Care can help provide all 3 of these necessities. Reece’s “customers” are the elderly or the disabled or indeed the carers of the elderly or disabled. His catchment area is Surrey and surrounding areas. Reece’s belief is that – no-one should ever have to go into care home, if they don’t want to.

EDUCATION
Alastair did the education slot this week and asked the question “What is the best way to get visitors?” and the answer is obviously to ask. How many people have you met this week that you could have potentially invited as a visitor? If you don’t ask they will never know of the opportunities that await them within BNI.

Today the speaker was Peter Moulton from Moulton Johnson Chartered Accountants. Peter gave a great presentation on the most tax efficient way of setting up in business. The emphasis was on Entrepreneurs and asking the question – “Are you running a business or just doing a job?” Take two people, doing the same sort of job but one becomes a sub contractor for one company whilst the other looks at what he wants his end goal to be and sets up the company accordingly.
Subcontractor – He has very little freedom and is governed by the IR35 rules where the prime aim is to ensure that individuals working via Limited companies would be subject to the same taxation laws as an individual performing the same task under PAYE conditions. He takes £300k profit over 3 years and is subject to 40% tax on the whole amount. This will leave him with just £180k in profit and there will be no value left in the business after this.
Entrepreneur – Wanted more out of the business than this so looked at the end game. He earned exactly the same profit as the Subcontractor but as he isn’t governed by IR35 rules he can pay himself in the most tax efficient way.
Salary £6000
Dividends £34000
Total £40000 x 3 yrs = £120,000
As the entrepreneur has built a business that has value to somebody else he could sell that business for 4 times the sustainable profit ie. £60k x 4 = £240k. This can be recorded in your accounts as goodwill and with the Entrepreneurs relief now available you will only be taxed at 10% and not 40% when you sell your business. Strategic planning is key to setting up and organising with the end result in view. Peter can provide you with the best advice in how to take your business forward.
DOOR PRIZE
The door prize was won by Ilze and is a book called E-myth by Michael E Gerber. It tells the story of Entrepreneurs.

EDUCATION
Martyn did the education slot this week which was about triangular numbers. He gave us a summary of how BNI works in terms of the number of possible 1 to 1’s and referrals and how it increases in triangular numbers. For instance, if a chapter only has 2 members then the only possible number of 1 – 1’s is 1 and referrals 2. As the chapter grows so do the number of possible 1 – 1’s and referrals, so for a chapter like ours that has 25 members this would mean 300 1 – 1’s and 600 referrals. A 20% increase in the number of members to 30 would give 435 1 – 1′s and 870 referrals, an increase of 45%. This underlines the importance of bringing visitors to the chapter and converting a high percentage into members. For those interested, there is an interesting example of this phenomenon known as Metcalfe’s Law.

EDUCATION
Geoff O’Shea did the education slot this week. He handed everybody a piece of A4 paper and told us all to close our eyes and rip a corner off the paper from the top and bottom. The point of this exercise was that everybody’s sheet looked different despite doing the same thing and this is reflected in the 60 seconds pitch. Unless you are specific people will interpret it in different ways so the motto “Be Specific in your 60 seconds” or you won’t get the business your desire.
